Serving Locally at Harrold Zion

SERVING LOCALLY

 Knitting Ministry

Fellowship and knitting are impoprtant parts of this ministry. Whatever a person is knitting, it is done so in Christian love. One main role of the group is to make prayer shawls which are blessed and given to individuals in and out of the church who may be going through a difficult time in their life.

These prayer shawls represent the arms and love of God which surround the recipient of a shawl.

Food 2 Go 4 Kids

Harrold Zion actively participates in the Food 2 Go 4 Kids program at Fort Allen Elementary School which neighbors the church. Whether through contributions, running a super market sweep or participating in a fundraising Chili and Wings Cook-off, we help provide weekend backpack lunches for local children in need of weekend meals.

"God’s work. Our hands." Sunday

Held the second Sunday of September, we join the churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in this opportunity to celebrate who we are as the ELCA – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Since 2013, thousands of ELCA congregations have participated in this opportunity and dedicated one day to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all people.  Harrold Zion has participated in this day by repairing a deck of a home, carried out a task for a local food bank, visited a local nursing facility, recognized first responders and provided items for the children who are experiencing disasters, and engaged in a pulpit exchange with a Lutheran homeless ministry in Pittsburgh called Abiding Ministries (collecting items needed for the homeless, led worship and provided lunch for those served by Abiding Ministries).

Rehabilitation Centers and Nursing Facilities

For 2 years, Confirmation students visit a local nursing facility once a month. It is here that they leave worship, visit residents, take Holy Communion, and develop relationships with these who now call the facility their home. On Ash Wednesday, Harrold Zion goes to the facility to impose ashes on those residents who wish to receive them.

Holiday Sponsorships

During the holidays, many area children are able to have the Christmas they hoped to have. This is the result of Harrold Zion providing gifts for 2 dozen individuals each Christmas. Harrold Zion coordinates this program with some area businesses and organizations who help offer a Merry Christmas to those in need. During the Easter season, Easter baskets are provided to children from the community who may not have celebrated Easter.

Westmoreland County Food Bank

Financial contributions and food donations are received each Thanksgiving time to help stock the shelves of the Food Bank which serves 15,000 Westmoreland County residents in need each month.

Meals on Wheels

At the core of the Meals on Wheels service is a nutritious meal, companionship and a watchful eye on the health and safety of our seniors. We bring the service to those who have trouble getting around, are ill, recuperating, or find it difficult to supply their own meals. Harrold Zion members deliver meals to the Fort Allen route for Tri-City Meals on Wheels.
